Borders Art: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
This is the first of six canon art posts, including artwork that I drew especially for the event at Borders Bookstore at Bailey's Crossroads in Virginia. (Again, I REALLY hope lots of you can come!) You guys were nice enough to help me fill out the poll, and as promised, the canon picture of your choice was finished! Also below is a request submitted by good friend, [info]cauldroncakebkr, who has absolutely stunned me in saying she will be providing a sorting hat cake for the event! *dies* Margie, you are too generous for words, and I hope you like the picture!

All book excerpts are under the cuts...

Title: Master of the Chessboard
Medium: Colored Pencil and Ink
Characters: Ron, Harry and Hermione
Rating: G
Notes: Okay, so there's nothing in the book that says that Ron mounts a horse when he becomes a Knight in Wizard's Chess. But, doesn't it make sense for there to be one? The Knight, King, and Queen abandon their spots, and any decent chessboard is gonna have a dang horse! So... what if the original Knight hopped off so that Ron could get on? Oh, forget it. I like drawing stone horses, so there.

Harry and Hermione stayed quiet, watching Ron think. Finally he said, "Now don't be offended or anything, but neither of you are that good at chess-"

"We're not offended," said Harry quickly. "Just tell us what to do."

"Well, Harry, you take the place of that bishop, and Hermione, you go next to him instead of that castle."

"What about you?"

"I'm going to be a knight," said Ron.

-Chapter 16, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Title: "Happy Birthday to Yeh."
Medium: Watercolor
Characters: Hagrid, Harry, and the Dursleys
Rating: G
Notes: I drew a HUGE Hagrid. I wanted to do this from a wee Harry's perspective, and to an eleven year old kid, a half-giant is gonna look ginormous. Plus, I think he looks more loveable when he's super-sized. :D

From an inside pocket of his black overcoat, he pulled a slightly squashed box. Harry opened it with trembling fingers. Inside was a large, sticky chocolate cake with Happy Birthday Harry written on it in green icing.

Harry looked up at the giant. He meant to say thank you, but the words got lost on the way to his mouth, and what he said instead was, "Who are you?"

-Chapter 4, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Thanks so much for having a look, and especially for voting for the scene! (Next up - a commission for [info]witherwings7!)

Ohhh, man! They're both amazing! I love that you're using different mediums for them, too! :D Showcase your talent, girl!

The watercolor is stunning. I love how giant-sized Hagrid is! I agree with the 11-y-o perspective thing, too! His giant hands are fabulously colored, as it Harry's clothes!

Your Prismacolors are just so amazing. All the time. The end. Gah. I know it sounds weird, but I love your work with stone and natural elements. Nothing seems more beautiful than that post and partially-lit horse's butt. The light spilling in from the back, too? Amazing! I also adore your canon!Mione! So cute!
Venessa: *glomps*[info]mudblood428 on March 28th, 2007 03:24 am (UTC)
You are so sweet, Kat! :D Thank you so much for all of your wonderful comments - I'm so happy you liked them!

And you totally WIN for noticing the partially lit-horse's butt, because I totally agonized over that bit! (Go figure, I should stress out over a horse's ass. Wouldn't be the first time, eh?)

Eee, they're so little and cute in that first one! And I like your Hagrid a lot, and the way Harry's shirt just hangs on him, poor skinny boy.
Venessa: Berti Bott's Beans[info]mudblood428 on March 28th, 2007 03:30 am (UTC)
Aw, thanks so much! I'm so glad you like the wee versions of my trio! :D

And yeah... poor malnourished, mistreated, unloved Harry. .. *hugs him*
Steph: Gimmee[info]paetonsrider on March 28th, 2007 03:28 am (UTC)
How lovely! The first one is perfect! The horse is spot on (if I do say so myself) and the shawdows in the background are great! The aging is perfect too - they look just like they should for their age! :D The second is awfully nice too, with the Dursley's expressions and the giant pink umbrella and HAgrid being perfectly huge. Fantastic!
Venessa: *flails*[info]mudblood428 on March 28th, 2007 03:31 am (UTC)
DUDE! I was totally thinking of you when I was drawing the horse. It was like, "I'd better draw this thing right, or Steph's gonna have my head..." ;)

SO happy you liked them!

Oh! These are so wonderful. The scene where Hagrid gives Harry his first birthday cake always gets me *sniff*

I adore the chess one. They all look so young! So baby-faced! I love it. I really hope that I will one day get the chance to see your art in the flesh. It's just so wonderful and inspiring, and seeing your art always makes me want to draw, which is something I'd been having the hardest time with for a really long time. So thank you for being the wonderfully fantastic artist that you are.

I AM SO GOING TO THIS IT'S NOT EVEN FUNNY.

And you can put "BOUGHT" next to the Ten Cups thing, to excite people into purchasing your work. If you are selling it, I mean.

'Cause this stuff needs to be bought.

If you're selling it, I mean.

*headdesk*

What day of the week is the show, what time is it, and how am I getting there? *sweet, sweet smile*
Venessa: *flails*[info]mudblood428 on March 28th, 2007 03:38 am (UTC)
YAY! :D

Um... HOW DID IT GO TONIGHT?? *flails*

And yes, I'll certainly put a nice big sign on the Ten Cups picture that it has been claimed by my lovely friend Benn :D

As to how you're getting there, I REALLY wish I could take you, but my car will be filled with my relatives who are flying in to see it. :( Is there someone you know who can drive you?

Oh my gosh. I love how adorably brave--and young!--they look in that first one. Your Hermione is gorgeous, but not to the point of being fanon-OMGHAWT, which is so IC. And I'm in love with the Dursleys and their expressions!

Aww, I especially love the first one. The chess scene was my favorite in the first movie.
lyras[info]lyras on March 28th, 2007 04:03 am (UTC)
Aw, they're so young in that first one! Which is just as it should be, of course. I really like the fact that they're dwarfed by the chess pieces.

Also, I love the Dursleys in the second piece! You have a great comic touch with them. And *sniff* Harry with his first proper birthday present!

Margie: Happy Birthday Sorting Hat Cake[info]cauldroncakebkr on March 28th, 2007 04:39 am (UTC)
EEEEEEEKKKK!!!! OMGOMGOMG!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE YOU TO PIECES!!!!! Ok, I’ll stop screaming for a minute to tell you how much I love it!! Gadzooks! I love it all from Hagrid’s rosy cheeks and warm eyes and Harry’s totally flabbergasted look on his face to Dudley’s piggy nose and Uncle Vernon’s big bushy mustache. The water colors make it look so misty and cold, just like it should be on a stormy night out on the sea. And the CAKE! The cake is perfect right down to the green frosting and the box. Oh and Harry’s oversized clothes, and how young he looks, God I could go on and on.

The other picture is wonderful too by the way. I love how young they look and how perfect you made everything look right down to the wrinkles in Ron’s socks and the reflections on the floor. I love the way the light is coming in from the way they came and from inside the rook window. And I love Ron’s red hair that way. It is the perfect little boy hair cut. *hugs them all* *hugs you too*

What would a Harry Potter fan have on her birthday with all her friends and family looking at her Harry Potter Art if not a Sorting Hat Cake? I tell you. You’ll need to tell me what you want on the inside soon sweetheart.

*BIG HUGS* * continues to scream and dance around the house* Wait till the boys see this in the morning. EEEEEKKK!!!
