Canon Art: Chamber of Secrets
First of all, if you haven't seen this beautiful painting by jadis289 that she made for my birthday, I hope you'll go over and see it. She's so talented and her art makes me happy! Thank you, Jade!

Secondly, thanks so much to everyone who commented on the Borders Picspam - your comments and Happy Birthday wishes really brightened up my weekend! And to those who donated to Relay For Life, you're made of win. 'Nuff said. LiveJournal alone has brought our team over the goal mark. I'm absolutely stunned. Just... THANK YOU.

Now, this was originally going to be a full color piece - unfortunately, my tendonitis flared up and I stopped cold. *weeps* It's okay though - graphite's my favorite because it turns my fingers black. XD

In any case, this was requested a LONG while back from the_vixxmeister. Hope you enjoy it. :)

Title: The Dueling Club
Medium: Graphite
Rating: G
Characters: Harry, Draco, Snape, Gilderoy Lockhart
Summary: "Wands at the ready!" shouted Lockhart. "When I count to three, cast your charms to disarm your opponents - only to disarm them - we don't want any accidents - one... two... three-"

Harry swung his wand high, but Malfoy had already started on "two": His spell hit Harry so hard he felt as though he'd been hit over the head with a saucepan. He stumbled, but everything still seemed to be working, and wasting no more time, Harry pointed his wand straight at Malfoy and shouted, "
Rictusempra." - Chapter 11: The Dueling Club, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

I love me some smug Snape. And congratulations on reaching your goal!

BTW, you have to let me know when you'll be arriving and departing PR. I hear you've got to run to make your graduation ceremony, but I'd like to give you a hug and say 'hi' before you run off!
Venessa: spooky snapemudblood428 on May 8th, 2007 02:23 am (UTC)
Absolutely! I wouldn't leave New Orleans without hanging out with you! I'll be arriving on Wednesday and leaving early Saturday (as in REALLY early). When will you be arriving?

And thank you :) I'm so glad you like the picture! That's Snape's all for you! :D

PS: The mail pink slip thingy says I have something from CafePress waiting for me at the post office... *squee*

God, I love the way you draw Harry -- he seems to have dignity even at the age of twelve.

I also love Snape's expression. PERFECT.

:D
Venessa: spooky snapemudblood428 on May 8th, 2007 02:25 am (UTC)
Aw, thank you! I'm so glad you like how he came out! Luckily I was feeling a bit like Harry does in this picture the day that I drew him! ;)

Everyone loves Snape's expression, but I can't stop laughing at Lockhart's, it's hilarious!
Venessa: Blowin' off some steammudblood428 on May 8th, 2007 02:27 am (UTC)
hehehehe

YAY! I gotta say, I was sort of giggling when I drew him. He looks a lot like a certain other arrogant person in my former acquaintance... *cough* I'll stop there before I'm forced to screen the comment!

Anyway, thanks! I'm happy you liked it!

Smirky Snape... just perfect!

Thanks! I love me some Smirky Snape! :D

I like this! It's got ACTION! :D The expressions are excellent as always, and I love the student falling over behind Lockhart.

As a fellow graphite user, gotta love the "black fingers" look. I like to combine it with my "after cleaning tack" look, which results in every line and crevice in my hand getting dyed with the black dye from the leather (it seeps out a tad when the saddles and bridles are soaped, and apparently attaches to my nails and hands! Oi!). It's very Halloween-appropriate. XD
Venessamudblood428 on May 8th, 2007 02:31 am (UTC)
Thanks, Steph! I totally agree - isn't there something gratifying about having black hands? It's like the stuff's way of saying, "now that's a job well done!" XD

I have a feeling the graphite is easier to clean off than the black dye, eh?

Another feather in your cap! I love it, you've captured everyone's expressions just perfectly. :D
Venessa: *glomps*mudblood428 on May 8th, 2007 02:33 am (UTC)
Aw, thanks Megan! The expressions were the most fun to draw :) (well... next to Lockhart's dainty stance)

Also, I got your e-mail. Stay tunned for a screened comment...

Yay for black fingers. :oP Lockhart’s expression is priceless. And I dig those fancy shoes he has on too. Harry and Draco are perfect as always. You really captured them at 12. I don’t think I’ve ever seen your Snape looking so smug before. It works beautifully here. They are going to love this at the book release showing.
Venessa: Blowin' off some steammudblood428 on May 8th, 2007 02:39 am (UTC)
Hehehe... Thank you! I'm glad you like how Lockhart came out. It's the first time I've drawn him. :)

And yeah, Snape's got that, "Draco's gonna kick the crap out of Potter" look. But alas! Harry gives it right back! Mwahahahaha!

*is still hazy from allergies*
Agent 27: Harry---surrenderwitherwings7 on May 8th, 2007 02:36 am (UTC)
This is so great, Draco's wonderfully pointy and Harry's adorable xD
Snape and Lockhart also crack me up :3

I'm glad that the goal was reached and beyond, that's awesome.

When I work with pastels, I find the concept of stained fingers to be annoying. I wonder how I'd fair if I used my graphite pencils more often. :P
Venessamudblood428 on May 10th, 2007 02:51 pm (UTC)
I didn't know you worked with pastels! Have you ever posted your stuff on LJ? I'd love to see it :)

And yeah, normally I'm pretty anal about what gets on my hands, but for some reason, I'm not satisfied drawing a graphite picture unless my fingers turn silver and black. It's like a sign of a job well done for me :)

Anyway, thank you for the compliments, and just so you know, I sent off your framed picture - please let me know when you get it! *prays it gets to you safely*

I vote that you draw more Snape.

Also... Awwwwwww, they're so little!! I love seeing the characters younger, cuz I'm so used to them older. I love the four very different expressions on them.
Venessa: Nevillemudblood428 on May 10th, 2007 02:55 pm (UTC)
I'm definitely trying to expand my ouvre of characters. Snape's among the ones I'm trying to get more experience drawing (Neville and Luna are included on that list as well!).

Anyway, thank you - I'm happy you like how those expressions turned out. I was making faces in the mirror for them. ;) Also, as per another comment you left on a past picture that I didn't get a chance to respond to, there is a Neville song in the works that I can't wait to record, if only for you and pennswoods to hear it!

Awesome
Like always V, this is an amazing drawing. I think my favourite part in your art is that you seem to pay a lot of attention to the faces of the characters.

Anyhow, I read your previous post, and found out you're coming to TORONTO!!!! (Unless I misread and you were coming for personal reasons only).
Venessa: mass hysteria!Nevillemudblood428 on May 10th, 2007 02:58 pm (UTC)
Re: Awesome
Thanks so much! I love it when artists pay attention to expressions - it adds a lot, even if the sketchwork is so-so. :)

And yeah! I'm definitely coming to Toronto! Will you be attending Prophecy 2007? That's where I'll be :)
secretsolitairesecretsolitaire on May 8th, 2007 02:52 am (UTC)
Eee, ickle Harry! :-D Snape's expression is fabulous.
Venessa: spooky snapemudblood428 on May 10th, 2007 03:04 pm (UTC)
Heee! I love me some ickle Harry! So much that I'm drawing a pic of an even *ickle-er Harry that I'm hoping to finish today. :) Thanks so much!

Yes! He does! I was going to make it a more pronounced mustache, but then I figured it would make him look more like Lumier from Beauty and the Beast than Gilderoy. lol

And you totally made my day. I adore your artwork, and the idea that an artist I respect so much totally digs my Draco... YAY! Thanks so much! :D
granola_bean: dumbledore's mangranola_bean on May 8th, 2007 02:54 am (UTC)
I love how your 12 year old harry looks 12 years old. I never seen anyone else manage to do this right. Two others, which show your age-awareness is the in the chamber fo sercrets colored drawing of ginny and harry and fawkes and then there is the recent painting of yours of the chess scene with Ron Hemrione and HArry. They all look there age.

And look there are all so canon. Draco has a pointed nose and chin and Snape has a hook nose and an angular face. Lockhart has wavy hair and Harry stills manages to look skinny in his uniform. Well done
Venessa: JKRowlingmudblood428 on May 10th, 2007 03:11 pm (UTC)
Thank you so much, g_b! I'm actually going to be illustrating a children's book this summer, and a lot of why I've been working on younger incarnations of Harry is to give myself some practice drawing younger features. The fact that you think this Harry actually looks 12 totally makes my day! :D I'm so glad you enjoyed the picture!

Smug!Snape, funny looking Lockhart, wonderful Harry and Smirky!Draco. What's not to like?

Anyway, glad to hear that you're over the goal mark! Wonderful.

Thanks! I'm TOTALLY flabbergasted at the LiveJournal response to the Relay thing. I've got a LOT of prints to send out! :D

And thank you for your comments on the picture - I can pick a couple things here and there that I happen not to like, but if you dig it, that's what counts! :)
Jackieforcedrhyme on May 8th, 2007 02:55 am (UTC)
Aww they look so yooung!

Snape's face is the best.
Venessa: spooky snapemudblood428 on May 10th, 2007 03:14 pm (UTC)
Thanks, Jackie! I'm glad you liked it, especially Snape's face. Before I drew Snape, I looked in the mirror and tried to look snarky... and that's what I wound up drawing!
